Along with other sports, cycling is given special attention in Turkmenistan. Because cycling has a positive effect on human health. Engaging in the sport helps to strengthen the body muscles and immunity, and to get rid of excess sugar in the blood. Breathing deepens and lung ventilation increases.
Cycling has a unique history. In 1816 German scientist Karl von Drais received a patent for the invention of the bicycle. Since its inception, it has become a symbol of health and high spirit, as well as a means of transportation. The bicycle is not only a means of physical activity, but also serves to reduce traffic congestion on city streets, reduce air pollution and improve people health. In many countries, the bicycle is considered an indicator of social progress.
Cycling began to gain popularity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1869 the first major competitions were held between the French cities of Paris and Rouen. Turkmenistan also has a long tradition of this sport. In 1894 the first cycling organization was created in Ashgabat. It can be noted that cycling was included in the program of the 5th Asian Indoor and Martial arts Games held in Ashgabat in 2017. In 2018 on the initiative of Turkmenistan, the Resolution adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations declared June 3 as World Bicycle Day. The holding of the World Track Cycling Championship in Ashgabat in 2021 further increased the enthusiasm of young people for this type of sport.
