When we look at the historical path of the Turkmen people, we see great individuals, who resembles ancient trees with deep roots. One of them is Magtymguly Pyragy, a wise poet, philosopher, sage, and a traveler who became famous throughout the world in the era of the Revival of a new epoch of aa powerful state. If we refer to the life and works of the great poet, we clearly can see that he was a traveler and visited many countries of the world. In his poem “How can I fly without wings” his dreams and lofty feelings carry him across the world.
I wish I could travel the world.
How can I fly without wings?
To deepen his knowledge and worldview, the poet traveled to countries such as Khorasan, Bukhara, Samarkand, Turkestan, and India, studying the literature, culture, and lifestyle of each country with great interest.
Magtymguly Pyragy spent a long time on a journey to India, the place he had always dreamed of. Before returning to his ancestral homeland, he bought a teapot from an Indian bazaar as a gift for his sister Zubeyda. The teapot is passed down through generations and remains preserved till this day. It is now kept in the Magtymguly Museum, built in honor of the poet, located in the center of Gerkez – the village where the poet lived. This stands as material evidence of his journey to India and is now being studied scientifically.
The poet was not just a traveler, but also studied the nature and climate from a scientific perspective of the countries he traveled to, along with its culture and way of life. The scientific views embodied in his poems have always been the focus of attention of scientists.
In every sense of the word, the works of Magtymguly Pyragy serve as a valuable source for scientists, travelers, and us young generation – as we seek to understand the wider world. Studying the thoughts and visions of this wise poet is a model for raising happy youth.
