A large-scale event, including a mass athletics race, an educational seminar, and bilateral meetings, was recently organised and held in Turkmenabat by the Permanent Mission of the UN Development Programme in Turkmenistan. It was timed to coincide with the 30th anniversary of permanent neutrality of the Turkmenistan and the 80th anniversary of the establishment of the Organisation of United Nations.
The sporting event, held under the motto «Confident steps toward peace and sustainable development», was attended by staff from the regional office of the Ministry of foreign affairs of Turkmenistan, representatives of political parties and public organisations, athletes and coaches, education, culture, and healthcare professionals, and volunteers.
The participants of 5-kilometer long-distance race started from Main flag square of Turkmenabat to the rousing performances of singers and musicians and continued compete along «Bitarap Türkmenistan» street. The large number of medal contenders ensured the competition was intense and engaging, demonstrating the widespread popularity of track and field in the region.
Turkmenabat residents Gurtgeldi Gurdov and Nargiza Kadyrova confidently completed designated distance, finishing first. Among the boys and girls, Muhammet Durdymyradov and Aziza Atahanova, students from Secondary school №14 in the Farap etrap, took first place. The winners and medalists were presented with diplomas and gifts in a ceremonial setting.
According to the established program, a meeting was held between UNDP Resident Representative in Turkmenistan Narine Saakyan, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative, and other senior officials with the leadership of the Lebap velayat. The meeting discussed cooperation on the implementation of a joint project between UNDP and the Ministry of environmental protection of Turkmenistan entitled «Conservation and sustainable management of high-value land resources and ecosystems in the Aral sea basin for multiple benefits».
