TURKMENISTAN AND UNESCO ARE EXPANDING COOPERATION.

UNESCO is the United Nations specialized agency for educational, scientific and cultural affairs, and plays a key role in international efforts to preserve cultural monuments and natural landscapes.

Thanks to the wise policy of our Hero-Arkadag and Arkadagly Hero Serdar continuous work is being carried out to thoroughly study and improve our national culture, historical values, traditions and customs passed down from our ancestors, and to have our tangible and intangible cultural heritage recognized at the international level. In this regard, a number of our people’s cultural heritage has been included in the UNESCO list.

Within the framework of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, more than 1,000 monuments of historical and cultural significance have been discovered and registered in Turkmenistan. In 1999, the the State Historical and Cultural Park “Ancient Merv” was included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List as the first historical monument in our country, in 2005 the State Historical and Cultural Park Kunya Urgench, and in 2007 the  State Historical and Cultural Park “Parthian Fortresses of Nisa”. In addition, in 2015, the epic art of “Gorogly” was inscribed on the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, in 2016 “Nowruz” holiday, in 2017 the “Kushtdepdi” rite of singing and dancing, in 2019 “Traditional Turkmen carpet making art in Turkmenistan”, in 2021 “Dutar making craftmanship and traditional music performing art combined with singing ”, in 2022 “Traditions of retelling the parables of Molla Efendi”, “Turkmen embroidery art” and “Sericulture and traditional production of silk for weaving”, in 2023, “The Turan temperate deserts”, “Silk Road: Zarafshan—Karakum Corridor”, the city of Ashgabat was included in the UNESCO World Creative Cities Network under the “Design” direction, in 2024, “The art of Akhal-Teke Horse Breeding and the Traditions of Horse Decoration” have taken a worthy place in the prestigious list of this organization.
